Swift Dzire vs Amaze vs Xcent – The Compact Sedan Showdown

As the government regulations are modified in the favor of lower emission and fuel efficiency above everything else, the Indian auto market feels the growing demand of compact sedans and small cars. They are fun to drive, affordable and they also occupy less space. The newer entries in this class of cars, namely the Swift Dzire, Honda Amaze and Hyundai Xcent, all have great potential. Thus, the competition between these cars is huge! The Xcent is newest entry in this overly competitive category. But can it overshadow the other two in terms of superiority and sales? Let us compare!

Exterior:

The compact sedans are actually derivatives of the hatchbacks. This is the reason why a large percentage of these cars look somewhat ungainly. The Hyundai Xcent, however, is quite well proportioned and looks quite trendy despite its small stature. The Honda Amaze also has a stylish exterior, and it fits the profile of a family car. Swift Dzire, on the other hand, is the oldest one among the three. But it still manages to pull off a modern appearance. However, a few features of the Dzire make it look a bit out-dated when compared to its newest competitors.

Interiors:

As the signature Hyundai style goes, the Xcent is packed with features that make its interiors quite lavish. The car offers a number of features that were new to this segment. Some of these features include cooled glove box, 1GB hard drive, rear AC vents. The cabin looks and feels much better than that of Honda Amaze. It is worth noting that the Amaze shares a lot of interior features with the Brio. The Swift Dzire features a rather conventional interior. Although the car is a superior version of the all black interiors of the previous cars, it still feels a little dated.

Engine and transmission:

The Xcent is powered by a 1.1-litre U2 CRDi diesel and 1.2-litre Kappa2 petrol engine. The petrol version produces a max power of 81bhp and max torque of 115Nm. The diesel version of Xcent produces a max power of 71bhp and a max torque of 160Nm. There is a 5 speed manual gearbox. Swift Dzire, on the other hand, features 2 options in engine – the 1.3-litre DDiS diesel engine, which produces a max power of 74bhp and a max torque of 190Nm, and 1.2-litre K-Series petrol engine, which produces a max power of 85bhp and a max torque of 115Nm. In Honda Amaze, you will get both diesel and petrol engine options. The 1.2-liter i-VTEC petrol engine produces a max power of 86bhp, whereas the 1.5-litre i-DTEC diesel engine produces a max power of 98bhp. Although both the engine of the Amaze provides good performance, the diesel engine has received some criticism particularly for its unrefined nature.

Mileage:

The Swift Dzire diesel version provides a mileage of 21.59 kmpl, whereas the petrol version 18.03. Honda Amaze provides mileage of 21.0 kmpl in the city, and 25.8 kmpl on the highways. The diesel engine version of the Xcent provides mileage of 18.9kmpl in the city and 24.4 on the highways. The petrol version, on the other hand, provides a mileage of 15.7 in the city and 19.1 kmpl on the highways.

Braking & Safety:

All the three cars feature standard safety and braking features. The Hyundai Xcent has push button start, ABS, dual front airbags, all electric rear view mirrors, fog lamps and turn indicators. The Swift Dzire has dual airbags, EBD and ABS, height adjustment, and climate control. The Honda Amaze features safety features like airbags, ABS and EBD, fog lamps and so on.
Performance & Handling:

Packed with advanced features, all the three cars provide great performance and an overall smooth performance. Although a little outdated, the Swift Dzire is actually a great family sedan. Honda Amaze is doing well in the market for is space, smooth drive and highly efficient engine. The Xcent is the latest to enter the market, and over a short span of time, it has already top the charts for record sales. Despite its cramped seats and uninspiring engine, the Xcent has fared well.

Each model has its strengths. Swift is economical, Amaze is spacious, Xcent is well balanced. Before choosing, I also check the availability of spare parts for each model so that I don't have any problems in the future.
